The Lobster BLT at Monty’s Sunset in Miami Beach brings together the very best of surf and turf in one dish

Lobster and pork make a winning combination at Monty’s Sunset Miami Beach.

Lobster: many ears perk up when that word is uttered, particularly in cities and towns located on waterfronts that are home to these delectable crustaceans. Bacon, of course, is another ingredient that gets most Americans — food lovers or not — all hot and bothered. Monty’s Sunset, located in Miami Beach, has combined these two gastronomic all-stars on one sandwich to make a lobster BLT that has garnered quite a bit of love from those in the know.

The sandwich is a double-decker, so there are two layers of nicely-sized chunks of fresh lobster, strips of bacon, the obligatory lettuce and tomato, and lemon aioli. Sure, there’s a New England lobster roll on the menu, but doesn’t bacon make everything better? Apparently, there are many who think so, as the sandwich was included on Thrillist’s 2013 list of Miami’s Best Sandwiches, and it has also garnered further internet approval from devoted food fans like Adventures of the Foodaholic. Perhaps soon, other restaurants around the country will take notice of the lobster BLT’s popularity and include their own pork-and-lobster marriages on their menus. We can only hope.

I just mentioned in the lunch thread that I have a PB&B again in my lunch and could use some (vegetarian) sandwich ideas for lunch. And then I thought, this could be a good thread.

So what are some of your favorite sandwich combinations?

I do a hummus wrap a lot with spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta and bell peppers. Super easy because I get all that stuff at Costco. Good in a WW pita too if I have them.

I also like mashed white or black bean and avocado wraps. Good with cheese, lime, cilantro, jalapeno, salsa or even just plain with a little salt and pepper.

Hummus on WW toast topped with sliced tomatoes is another favorite. Fresh basil too, if I have it!

My dad makes an amazing veggie sandwich from a recipe he clipped from Sunset back in the 80s. You toss a bunch of thinly sliced veggies (tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini) with an Italian type dressing or vinaigrette and layer them on a crusty baguette topped with havarti.

I'd like to try making a Thai wrap with veggies and peanut sauce but have yet to get my act together.

ETA: I prefer wraps for work lunches, I don't like eating pre-assembled (even made my me) sandwiches at lunch. If I'm in the mood for a sandwich, I want to make it at home and eat it right then and there.

Chef Emeril Lagasse Features His Favorite Waterfront Restaurants on Latest Emeril’s Florida Episode

(Tallahassee, FL) – The Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) is proud to present this week’s episode of Emeril’s Florida airing Sunday, January 25, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. EST on the Cooking Channel. In Sunday’s episode, “Waterfront Favorites,” celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse visits three of his beloved waterfront restaurants in the state. Emeril rounds out the episode cooking marinated crab claws.

“Restaurants are such an important part of our local communities here in Florida,” said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. “We encourage everyone to taste true Florida-fare at these unique dining destinations that are just a small sample of the many waterfront restaurants offered in the Sunshine State.”

Emeril’s first stop on the “Waterfront Favorites” episode is Ulele, located on the Hillsborough River in Tampa. Richard Gonzmart, of the Columbia Restaurant Group, created this unique restaurant in an old water works building. Ulele is inspired by Gonzmart’s interest in Florida’s rich Native American culture and tribal influences are shown in the cuisine, structure, and other nuances at the restaurant. Costing $8 million, Ulele was completely redone in the same style as the original structure down to the window fixtures which were replicated by a local artist. The cuisine is as local as possible and the restaurant serves strictly Florida beef though relationship Richard has with a 4 th generation Florida cattle rancher. Emeril sits down with Richard to get the story behind Ulele and tries some of their signature dishes.

Emeril then travels to Jacksonville Beach in Northeast Florida to Marker 32, which has been a favorite of locals and visitors since it opened in 1992. While it has a casual feel, Marker 32 is a fine-dining restaurant and has been recognized with numerous awards over the years. The philosophy of Owner and Executive Chef Ben Groshell is simple. He uses fresh, local seafood and makes everything from scratch. That formula has been a successful one and Chef Ben and his team have created long-standing relationships with local anglers and distributors to secure the freshest fish from the Atlantic and Gulf sides of the state. Emeril and Chef Ben sample some of the restaurant favorites including Herb-Grilled Trigger Fish Cast Iron Seared Mangrove Snapper and M32 Broiled Oysters.

On his third and final stop in the “Waterfront Favorites” episode, Emeril heads south to Miami Beach to Monty’s Sunset. As the name implies, the restaurant is known for its sunsets, but since Matthew and Tricia Johnson took over the establishment, it is now making a name for itself with its impeccable food. Monty’s Sunset boasts a spacious, newly renovated interior and a large outdoor terrace that includes a new 20-foot raw bar alongside a pool and cabana. The menu was also recently redone by former Top Chef alum, Josie Smith-Malave, who worked at Monty’s in 1996. Emeril meets poolside with Matthew and Tricia and tastes some of Monty’s Sunset’s latest offerings that include Stone Crab, Oysters and Peel-and-Eat Jumbo Shrimp Whole Fried Yellowtail Snapper with Ponzu Sauce Lobster BLT and Key Lime Pie.

The New York Times-London Journal reported on a study conducted at Leeds University which consisted of testing 700 variants of the sandwich. They experimented with different cooking styles, types of bacon, breads, oils, and special additions. Each variant was then ranked by 50 tasters. In conclusion, the best bacon sandwiches are made with "crispy, fried, and not-too-fat bacon between thick slices of white bread." [4]

Another study by the Direct Line for Business listed the top additions to the traditional bacon butty in England. Although the original was still the preferred sandwich, the next top contender was the "breggy" which adds an egg. The next popular accessory was mushrooms, followed by cheese. For sauces, brown sauce was slightly favoured over ketchup.

The BLT is a popular variant of the bacon sandwich with the additional ingredients of lettuce and tomato, but served cold. [5]

In Ontario, Canada, peameal bacon sandwiches are a common variation, usually served on a soft kaiser bun and are considered the unofficial dish of Toronto. [6]

Numerous studies have showed a connection between processed meats and an increased risk of serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, various cancers, and cardiovascular disease. [7]

A study in 2007 conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund found that there was "convincing evidence" of a link between processed meats and an increased chance of cancer. Although no numerical value was provided for the risk, they did state that "people should not eat more than 500g of red meat a week." [8]

The World Health Organization released a warning concerning the sodium content in bacon. For 100g of bacon, there are approximately 1,500 mg of sodium. [9] Currently, the FDA reports that the average American adult should consume less than 2,300 mg per day. Too much sodium in the diet can lead to a higher probability of high blood pressure, which is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. [10]

A rain soaked dreary day led us to this restaurant on the way to bar harbor . We walked into a warm inviting lobster shack . The staff made us feel like family- immediatly offering a warm beverage. We all ordered the lobsta rolls ( smidge of mayo). A lot of lobsta chunks- we were more than pleased. For dessert homemade Maine blue berry cake and ice cream! A awesome lunch!!

Being from coastal Maine, I'm used to the oceanfront restaurants that offer the typical fried seafood piled high on French fries. You can get this at Cook's, too, but you get other delectable choices as well! The chef at Cook's offers a French twist to the mix. Chowder is the go-to on the coast, but the French Onion Soup shouldn't be passed up. Don't miss the Chicken with Brie and Caramelized onions topped with pesto mayonnaise on a perfect bulky roll for lunch. Also give Motel Rita's Margarita a chance to please your palate! While your sense of taste is being satisfied, your sense of sight is equally gifted with the view. No matter where you are sitting, there is beauty out the windows, sometimes still, sometimes filled with movement. And the wait staff is so good! It's a win-win at Cook's!

Cook's restaurant is the best known catering business in Maine. We discovered it several years ago while exploring the beauties of the state. It was a dream to come back to all those isles and islands we fell in love with during our previous visits. And so we came back, just a week before Memorial Day, to find most places closed for the season or open only on certain days and hours.. Cook's restaurant was open and invited us to taste the best seafood in Maine .. We decided to sit at the deck though it was chilly and windy..Everybody looked cold but the sun kept us outside.. Lobsters happened to be beyond our budget: $25 for 1 1/4, and $29 for 1 1/2 , jumbo lobster roll for $36, and lobster BLT for $21.,- all market price. so I took a regular lobster roll for $20 and a Guinness.. Both were great! Next time we go to Cook's it should be late summer when lobsters are an affordable treat!

Review: Peacock Alley at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando

OK, I totally have ANOTHER awesome waffle sandwich to share with you today!!

And you can find it in an unlikely location…the Waldorf Astoria Orlando Resort. Nestled in Bonnet Creek, within the main gates of Walt Disney World, it’s a great mix of convenience and refinement. Plus, there are some seriously killer views of Disney’s theme parks from its balconies.

Today, we’re grabbing a casual lunch at the resort’s main lounge — Peacock Alley.

This spot’s namesake is the fashionable Peacock Alley of the Waldorf Astoria in New York City (the original was given the name due to the colorful peacock feathers the ladies wore in their hats) but while it’s elegant, you can definitely choose this location for a relaxed and casual lunch.


Everything about Peacock Alley makes me want to take a deep breath, sink into a comfortable chair, and relax. The cool colors and motif of peacock feathers surrounds you throughout (even on the carpet!).

The view is of the Waldorf’s pool area and golf course. And you may even catch a glimpse of Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

There is a luxuriously appointed bar on one wall, and there’s even a peacock etched in the mirror.

Time to take a look at the menu and see what they have to offer!

Some of the guest favorites remain on the menu from the last time we reviewed Peacock Alley, but there were several new dishes we couldn’t wait to try!

We started with a look at the Cocktail Menu. I wish I could have one of each… .

A friend had joined me for lunch, and she opted for the simple and refreshing White Sangria. It was beautiful in the glass!

With a base of crisp Sauvignon Blanc, flavors of peach vodka, elderflower liqueur, orange juice, and white grape juice make this a bright and flavorful cocktail for an afternoon kick-back after a day at the parks. My friend loved the light addition of fresh fruit, too.

I opted for the Tropical Breeze Mocktail. It really does look like a tropical sunset in a glass, doesn’t it? And it was so refreshing — with strawberry, mango, and pineapple, topped with a splash of ginger ale.

The menu features small plates, salads, and sandwiches — an a couple of fantastic desserts. But more on that later.

I had tried the incredible Preserved Tomato Soup, Lobster “BLT” Popovers, and the Four-Cheese Fondue with Braised Artichokes on my previous visit and all of the dishes were amazing! (I’m still dreaming of that fondue!)

So this time, we decided to try something different and opted for the chilled Avocado and Crab Summer Rolls.

The cold and pliable rice paper was filled with a good amount of crab and avocado, held together with just a little bit of creamy dressing. The Ginger Garlic Dip offered a nice contrast with just a little zip.

And after the appetizer, we both decided that sandwiches sounded like a good option.

We asked our server what the favorites were, and were advised that The Club is super popular. Layers of chicken breast, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and bacon also held a few surprises — like fried egg and pineapple aioli!

This thing was massive, and stuffed to the brim with goodies. The addition of a few interesting ingredients on the sandwich made it something really special!

No kidding — this is easily shareable.

But I could NOT pass up the option of the Ham and Cheese Waffle Sandwich, Peacock Alley’s answer to a Croque Monsieur.

Oh my goodness, you guys — the moment I bit into this thing I knew there was something completely different about it.

Made with spicy Tasso ham and Gruyere Cheese, once again the special ingredients elevate an otherwise common sandwich to something special.

HOWEVER…the thing I was noticing at first bite was that the waffle wasn’t your standard sweet Belgian waffle. This had been made with herbs baked right into the batter. And, in addition, there was a dusting of Sea Salt over the top. Waffle sandwiches are often criticized for being too sweet, but the savory additions here were perfect.

While the potato chips that came with our sandwiches were perfectly fine, they weren’t anything special so we added an order of French Fries to share. They were crisp-tender and nicely seasoned.

With lunch behind us, we couldn’t resist a peek at the Dessert Menu.

What caught our eye? The Waldorf Astoria Red Velvet Cake, of course! I was very intrigued with the addition of beet puree. Hmmm… I guess that meant no bright red color would be the hallmark of this sweet treat!

When it came to our table, we found a chocolate cake with just a hint of a red hue — and a huge topping of luscious cream cheese frosting almost an inch thick. Heaven. (Stay tuned to DFB, cause I’ve got the recipe for this one coming soon!)

The cake was moist and delicious, and the frosting was creamy versus hard and lardy. We were definitely big fans of this one!


I seriously give a sigh of relaxation every time I walk into the Waldorf, and Peacock Alley continues that respite from the hustle and bustle of the theme parks. I always have great experiences here. The food is incredible, as they elevate the simplest of dishes to something special. And I leave feeling like I’ve spent an afternoon in relaxed luxury.

I hope that you have the opportunity to make it over to the Waldorf Astoria Orlando on an upcoming visit to Disney World. And if you do, be sure to take a breather in Peacock Alley. Whether you stop by for a light lunch or drinks and small plates, this haven deserves a visit.

Your guide to Austin's very best sandwiches from barbecue to banh mi

There’s more to sandwiches than proteins, assorted vegetables, dressings and baked breads. In fact, Americans love their sandwiches so much that an entire month is dedicated to celebrating their very existence.

August is National Sandwich Month, and to celebrate all the amazing local options, CultureMap has picked our favorite Austin options. Read on to see if your favorites made the cut.

Garbo’s lobster roll
You may not expect to find great New England cuisine here in the South, but Garbo’s Fresh Maine Lobster isn’t your typical seafood. The restaurant serves a plethora of ocean fare, including shrimp cocktails, fish and chips, smoked salmon, oysters and baked clams, but our favorite dish by far is the lobster roll, made in both the Connecticut style (warmed in butter) and Maine style (mayonnaise, celery and lemon). The equally soft and crunchy sandwich comes with house-pickled vegetables and crisp fries.

The Hightower's carnitas
This East Seventh Street restaurant serves a myriad sandwiches and bites on its well-rounded menu. One of the most popular and decadent sandwiches the restaurant offers is the carnitas sandwich served with salsa verde, soft avocado, pickled shallots, pinto beans, crema and a bolillo roll. What’s more, in honor of National Sandwich Month, the restaurant is offering a 15 percent discount on all sandwiches during lunch hours through August 31.

FoodHeads' apple pork
You can’t go wrong with swine! Hyde Park sandwich stop FoodHeads has a delectable menu of sandwiches from every food group, but our favorite is the juicy apple pork. Grilled pork tenderloin is served with smoked gouda cheese, spinach, pungent apple and tomato pico, and honey Dijon aioli on toasted ciabbata.

Home Slice Pizza's Italian assorted
It’s not every day you go to a pizza place for a sandwich, but whenever you tire of Home Slice’s pies, try the Italian assorted. The sandwich has become a favorite of diehard Home Slice fans with its fresh-cut Italian meats (ham, Genoa salami, hard salami and capicola), locally sourced tomatoes, provolone cheese, lettuce, red onion, dressing and mayonnaise sandwiched between fresh-baked American-Italian bread.

Tam Deli's char-grilled pork banh mi
A good banh mi is hard to find and few local establishments have sourced the Vietnamese staple quite like Tam Deli. The North Lamar Boulevard cafe utilizes flaky French bread to surround an array of banh mi creations, including the savory pork with crunchy veggies. Elevate the sensory experience with a fried egg on top!

Noble Sandwich Co.'s PBLT
We find it near impossible to name our favorite sandwich at Noble Pig when all the options knock it out of the park. But if we’re forced to pick a winner, the gold medal goes to none other than the smoky PBLT. The popular Burnet Road sandwich shop does a play on the traditional BLT using smoked pork belly, romaine lettuce, roasted tomato and an aromatic garlic mayo on toasted bread.

Gourmands Cleopatra
Gourmands couldn’t have picked a better name for this beautiful vegetarian sandwich. The tall, garden-centric meal — made with havarti, marinated artichokes, black olives, poblano peppers, sliced cucumber, sprouts, soft avocado and roasted garlic mayonnaise — is a staple at this East Austin pub.

Counter Cafe's grilled pimento cheese
Down here in the South we take our pimento cheese seriously. Counter Cafe may have garnered fame for its Counter burger, but the grilled pimento cheese is a sandwich that must also be experienced. The acclaimed cafe blends an array of cheeses, diced pimentos, bibb lettuce, red onions, tomatoes and cafe-made mayonnaise surrounded by grilled nine-grain bread to create this splurge. Pair the cheesy meal with a side of sweet potato fries.

La Barbecue's La Chopped
You didn’t think we’d make it through this list without including a barbecue sandwich, did you? Franklin Barbecue boasts one of the most popular barbecue sandwiches in the city, but La Barbecue has infused a bit of magic into its version. Order this meaty entree with pulled pork or chopped brisket topped off with pickles, onion and tangy chipotle slaw. You won't go home hungry!
